Beware of the Risen People

I haven't written in a while because to be honest I haven't done a lot. Between moving and having recently finished the SSP program (minus having written the final paper), I've been busy with things that aren't very exciting.

After finishing mhy last SSP tutorial (a trip to the National Gallery to look at 20th c Irish art), I went to the Garda. It was a fun 3 hour wait with nothing on TV but a live feed from the papal visit to Glasgow, the first 15 minutes of which was his motorcade. But as soon as I went in I saw a girl from the SSP program and talked to her. After she left I had a nice conversation with a Canadian med student who knew where Delaware was and delightfully told me where the meth clinics were in Dublin, i.e. places to avoid at night. Then the girl I worked with all summer appeared and I met a couple of her roommates. So the time was pleasantly spent. After I spent all that time there, I went up to the counter and talked to a representative for 3 minutes, then got my ID card within five minutes.

Today after we finished the SSP, I went with a few friends to Kilmainham Gaol and then to the War Memorial Gardens. The jail was really interesting, and I felt like I learned a but about the personal side of history of the 1916 rebels and the ordinary prisoners there throughout the 19th century. And was told again of the awfulness of 17th century executions. I felt like it was the eighth time on this trip I've heard 17th c hangings described as incredibly gruesome, taking the person 15-45 minutes to die.
Anyway, then we walked to the War Memorial Gardens commemorating the World Wars. It was almost deserted which was odd. Also, I'm pretty sure Ireland didn't really recognize WWII, calling it "the Emergency" and not getting involved. So I thought it was queer they had a commemorative park. It was very pretty, but also eerie.

After that we came back for taco night which was quite successful. One of my roommates came over to drop off her bag. I really like my new apartment, but I definitely miss my old roommates and especially having people around since I'm the only one moved in at this point. Soon other people will move in. I'm excited to meet new people and start classes and things. And I will add pictures to everything soon, too (so the title will make sense)!
